— AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON THALASSAEMIA AND HAEMOGLOBINOPATHY

The target groups are students of 11th.and 12th.standard who would may soon engage themselves in choosing life partners. Armed with a clear knowledge about their status would help them make right choice and that will be a big important step to avoid future child birth with Thalassaemia.
Our Society has organized campaigns against Thalassaemia and trained a big number of peer-educators in collaboration with local trade union. Worker leaders from Steel, Coal and unorganized informal sector industries have been trained to carry on awareness campaign in their respective areas of work. This is an ongoing process.

— FUTURE PLANS AND OBJECTIVES

DSPT&A plans to develop this Centre popularly called as Durgapur Thalassaemia Centre, into a centre of excellence with all the testing, analysis and research facilities.
Dr. Prosanto Chowdhury is deeply associated with the workings of this Centre. He is a renowned Child specialist as well as an expert on Thalassaemia and Haemoglobinopathy, an activist connected with Thalassaemia International Federation, Nicosia, Cyprus.
This Centre has plans to publish quality papers on Thalassaemia for the purpose of awareness campaign among the uninformed and reports on fundamental work by the experts. It aspires to be a store house of vital information’s on both Thalassaemia and Haemoglobinopathy.
It has a modest beginning but by virtue of dedicated service and sincere efforts, we are confident that Durgapur Society for Prevention of Thalassaemia and AIDS will become a Centre of importance in near future.
Simultaneously this Centre is trying to build a powerful mass opinion to make pre-marital blood screening mandatory to bring down, if not to eliminate, future birth of Thalassaemics.

Bringing Dreams for Living Healthy

Providing blood to Thalassaemia afflicted children regularly with a nominal charge ₹ 400 i.e. nearly for the entire gamut of operations namely:

  1. Sampling of blood.
  2. Matching and selection of blood.
  3. Transfusion under supervision of qualified doctors.
  4. Emergency arrangements

These are our most prominent and visible activity. This Society has recognition and appreciation for this most important but self-less service.
This particular activity is being carried out flawlessly for the last 15 years despite constraints of different nature.

Providing blood to Thalassaemia afflicted children

Durgapur Society for Prevention of Thalassaemia and AIDS had started its targeted activities in the year 2003 with the triple objectives of:

  1. Providing relief to the patients afflicted with the dreaded disease of Thalassaemia. 
  2. To take up a pro-active role in the process of elimination of Thalassaemia through pre-marriage blood screening to detect Carriers and subsequent guidance about their future marriage or child birth.
  3. To carry out a continuous programme of campaign for elimination of Thalassaemia .
